Funding a Heart-Lung machine

TARGET SPECIFIC APPEAL FOR DONATIONS TO FUND A HEART-LUNG MACHINE

JAFFNA TEACHING HOSPITAL

The Oxonian Heart Foundation (OHF) has facilitated through consultations and persuasion the appointment of a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon by the Ministry of Health. This appointment was made in January 2017 and the facilities to start the clinical program are being developed. The OHF wishes to facilitate the provision of a Heart Lung Machine to help in this endeavor to support this service to the impoverished population of Northern Sri Lanka.

US$: 104,000.00 is the required target

There was a cardiothoracic unit in Jaffna general Hospital up to 1984. Following the breaking out of the conflict the service ceased and represented a serious but inevitable consequence of the war. The restoration of this service is a dire need. The path to achieving the developments to date has been protracted and painful for all, including patients with life threatening heart disease.

The OHF introduced heart surgery to Jaffna and the North three years ago. A private sector hospital was used and over fifty procedures have been performed. These have included patients who have required emergency surgery and the destitute. Apart from the patients undergoing surgery at no cost several have been subsidized by various means. Nearly 200 patients still languish on waiting lists in Colombo and Kandy for up to three years. Many have died during the wait.
